They have $1 tacos on Mondays and Tuesdays, and they have a veggie option (with avocados, lettuce, tomatoes, and refried beans), a chicken option (seasoned shredded chicken, which is quite great), and a steak option (dices of beef cubes that are a little overly cooked). I actually really like the veggie and the chicken; the veggie is nice and creamy with the avocado and you barely miss the meat with the refried beans. The chicken is good as well with the meat being shredded and seasoned quite well. Customer service was quite nice, though, and the joint itself is located in a plaza off of Rand and Central. +#1 taco Mondays/Tuesdays +veggie tacos! +chicken tacos! +friendly staff

Used to go here a lot. The tacos are usually pretty good They do have taco tuesday with $1 tacos. The thing that pisses me off is when you order take out Example.... 6 tacos togo and they put 3 tiny cups of hot sauce inside. I asked can i get a few more. She hands me one more. I ask again can I get a a couple more, she hands me one again and she definitely understood me fine. Its like WTF are you saving them to take them home or something. There is large bottles on every table, why hoard the ones in the tiny plastic cups. On that note.... Tacos 3-4 stars Service and sauce hoarder 1 star.

Long time El Famous fan. First time EVER disappointed. I frequent Wheeling location more often. Ordered a chile relleno / steak burrito only to get home and find ground beef and no chile. I was very clear when ordering. This location is clearly trying to cut corners and it's not working. Also charging 25 cents for a side cup of jalapeno. Hopefully they get this location back on track. This visit certainly not up to El Famous standards.

Best lunch special in the area hands down. The burrito and fry special is nearly impossible to beat. But a little inconsistent in size and all of a sudden they charge for the small container of carrots jalps and onions. $1 taco Tuesday is great, but be prepared for the crowds. Their burrito is my favorite in the area. If ur near by and hungry I doubt u will regret it. Random comment a friend just told me their quesadilla are very good and super cheap. Haven't tried them myself but look forward to ok my next visit. Give it a shot if ur close bye.

Wonderful and unique fresh chicken tacos! I only order the chicken tacos here, but they are unique and wonderful. Their chicken is not that chopped breast type but from a fresh cooked chicken and then its smothered in a tasty just spicy enough red sauce. I love these and always come here for them. Their steak is average, I have had better, but no one holds a comparison to their wonderful chicken tacos. Do yourself a favor, if you went here and did not like the food or found it just okay then do yourself a favor and go back and try their chicken tacos.

It was just happenstance that we ended up here. My boyfriend remembered liking the one in Tinley Park. Jason ordered the Steak Burrito without beans. For $5.50, it includes beans, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. I wasn't hungry so I asked to try a bite of his Steak Burrito. In my mind, I thought the vegetables looked fresh but the steak was pale and tasted like it was a few days old. Tonight marks the first time I watched my boyfriend spit out food! He wasn't discreet. He put it right back on his uneaten portions. I asked Jason what was the matter. He complained that it didn't taste good and he wasn't going to put any more of it in his mouth. He grabbed a refill of Diet RC to wash the taste down and we were out.

Excellent food and service! No gamey meat like every other joint. Super happy with this place!

Cannot get enough of the $1 Tuesday and Sunday tacos! My brother and I have made it tradition to stop in every Sunday for tacos and horchata. The food is good, but the service is hit or miss. I don't hold it against the staff, though, because I normally only go there during busy times.

Tried this place out for their Taco Tuesday special over my lunch break. All tacos are only $1/each. The tacos were mediocre at best. They don't come with a ton of toppings and sour cream isn't a standard there. I'm not a fan of corn tortillas to begin with but the ones I had weren't good at all. Note: They prefer cash. Will only accept card if your order is over $5.

Not the best taco joint around. Meat is low quality, a bit rubbery when it comes to steak and pork. The chicken, vegetarian tacos are good. The chicken quesadillas are exceptional! Best days to go are Tuesday and Sunday for $1 tacos.

This is the BEST Mexican place ever! I am so surprised at such low rating. They can make any order vegetarian which I love. The food tastes AMAZING! and it is inexpensive too! I mean whole dinner with drink $6 ??? Super super delicious!!! But only this place, there is another El Famous Burrito in Glendale Hts, IL but the food is not that good there.

HORRIBLE! Treatment that is! The cashier was NOT HAPPY 2 see a NEW customer, felt disrespected female was not nice . Ordered 2 steak burritos thgt I heard her say ground meet so I repeated myself "that is steak right"? She said yes, got home they were ground beef ! NO cheese NO sour cream & the large burrito barely had any meat- called her back she DID NOT even apologize instead she blamed me! How can u mess up on such an easy order- make sure u GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

Anyone who knows Chicago Mexican food knows the El Famous brand. It's a chain, of sorts, in that it's a brand name shared by several affiliated (but not necessarily partnered) business owners. WAY back when as a college kid we started going to the El Famous on N. Clark St in Chicago. I hate to date myself but we're talking 30 years ago. We could get a great steak burrito for like $2 and bring in a six pack from the liquor store next door. The owner Vince was the best. Years later when I found myself out in the NW burbs and discovered Vince owned the Mt Prospect El Famous too, I became a regular. Well that was then and this is now. After a while there developed a "counter cartel" of guys taking orders and making food whom I didn't really care for. I always got the feeling they were one step removed from thugs. They'd try coy little tactics to push t-shirts and shake down tips like they were street hustlers. Didn't like it, and the food wasn't great a couple times so I stopped going. I hadn't been there for about five years until just recently when I did give it another try. I'm not sure if Vince owns this location any more, can't say for sure but this past visit there it seemed an unfamiliar couple (mid 40s or so) were in charge. Anyway the man gave me some very nasty looks, which gave me the impression he was mistaking me for someone else. I mean he was glaring at me. I almost left but didn't. I ordered a steak burrito, rice and drink. The burrito was OK, that was it. I doubt I would ever go back. Vince, if you're out there and you still own this place, I'd love to see a response.

First of all - they raised the cost of the $1 taco to a $1.25 okay, not the end of the world, but the quality of the product has decreased drastically. I will NOT be back to eat there ever, even if they lower their prices to free.

I was here last Sunday and ordered a burrito. Service was excellent. Burrito, besides falling completely apart, was tasteless, even with their salsa. Threw most of it away. I was there today for $1 tacos. Got chicken and bound beef. Again had no flavor. I may be back to check out their nachos, but that's a big maybe. The one in Wheeling is soooo much better.

This place is not that different from a lot of other Mexican fast food places. The price are reasonable and it sports a nice easy to get to location. I've been there a handful of times.

I went here on a suggestion from my carpool buddy and ordered the stuffed pepper burrito. Service was fast and courteous, the burrito was absolutely delicious;and what the heck is in that absolutely amazing green salsa? As a city girl, I must warn you to be careful if you're crossing the drive path in the parking lot. Those suburbanized people in their giant SUVs drive horribly fast. I only give it 4 stars because I need to try other menu items.

Their food has been a staple of my diet since discovering them as a teenager on Clark street in Chicago. Always fast and delicious no matter what items I order. I've tried other well rated places with similar menus just for variety, though El Famous is still number one.

Note, this is a review of El Famous Burrito at Mount Prospect and it is specific to their tacos. Why just their tacos? Because they have a special Taco Tuesday and Sunday where all tacos are $1. If you're going to have a special on something, at least make it good. I'm not sure how the other El Famous Burritos stack up against this one, but I can tell you this specific location has really declined over the years. I remember when I first started coming here 4-years ago and had quality Mexican food. It was tasty, the quality of meat was great and the prices were good. Perhaps this location has gotten too big too fast? In the last 2-years or so, El Famous Burrito has implemented a Taco Tuesday (and Sunday) where all their tacos were selling for a buck. That's a pretty awesome deal for this cheap Yelper as you can spend $10 on tacos and have enough for dinner and lunch the next day. The tacos were so good, they tasted great even when reheated. The steak tacos were my go-to. In the past year or so, I'm not sure if their profit margins are less because of the Taco Tuesday deal, but when you order the steak tacos, you get the cow-cartilage tacos instead. Every other bite is a chomp on either fatty meat and/or cartalidge. The chicken tacos are leaner, but there will be bones in it every now and then. Perhaps its a fluke? Not so, as every time I order the steak tacos (fool me 5x shame on me!) there's a gem of fat with every other bite. The ground beef tacos are decent, but I'm thinking its because they grinded up all the fat and cartilage to an unrecognizable pile of meat. Also, in the past, you can grab your hot sauces and hot peppers/carrots/onions as you please. I'm not asking for freebies, but now they charge .25-cents for every small solo cup container of hot peppers. I don't mind paying for it, but you kind of need it to mask the bland flavor of the tacos now. It's almost like charging for salt and pepper packets at this point. I've had their tostados and burritos in the past, and they were tasty, but I'll admit I haven't had them in awhile. I'll give those a chance and will update my reviews in the future. BATHROOM REVIEW: THe bathroom is located at the end of a dingy looking hallway. There is a private bathroom for mens and another for womens. Inside, I was surprised that it wasn't as dingy as the hallway. I was kind of expecting a Chinatown bathroom, but this one was decent... not good, but decent. The toilet looked clean, but the sink was dirty and the tiles on the floor was dingy as well. Be careful stepping back after you pee or else you can twist your ankle as you stumble on a drain hole that is about 2-3 inches lower than the rest of the bathroom floor. The sink lacked a drain grate. Sit or squat? Squat.

I love the food at EL Famous. The steak tacos are delicious, the quesadillas are simple but tasty, the tortas are terrific, and the salsa in the chips and salsa has just the right amount of kick. It can get get really crowded on Taco Tuesday, but it's hard to pass up dollar tacos. You get what you pay for here, and I would probably pay twice the amount for a number of the items and still be satisfied.

$1 Steak Taco......Steak had a huge piece of cartilage and was absolutely white and tasteless. Las Asadas is by far the best in the Area, and Taco Village is just so-so. I would rather get a Hot Tamale from the Mexican Supermercado on Miner st.......

I give them 4 out of 5 stars simply because they don't have linqua. Otherwise, franchise or not, best burritos in the Chgo area, and that's coming from a burrito connoisseur (I've eaten them EVERYWHERE around the city and burbs). Their steak burritos are perfectly seasoned, and grilled just enough juicy, ie, no meat juice rolling down your arm as you take a bite. For those who complain about them stuffing too much lettuce in them, just tell them to hold the lettuce. I have mine with extra onions and cilantro, beans and tomato, that's it. Delic! Can't say much about anything else they serve, never ordered it.

WTH This place is a joke compared to the "better" locations. 1. They don't have the mixed peppers for free. 2. They dont offer steak in their meal choices. My friend ordered beef and it was nasty greasy ground beef. 3. I ordered the pork burrito and there was a crapload of tendon and cartiliage (i'm not opposed to either but it was lot) 4. Their green and red sauces aren't good 5. Place seemed dirtier than the other locations. 6. Place was empty (maybe crap location or the news has spread) I only gave two stars because the order taker is nice.

Love their tacos and as busy as they are they always get food ready quickly. They also have on Sundays and Tuesdays dollar tacos-great food and great service. I got the steak tacos which were great and the chips and salsa which i then ordered extra to take home.

been here a couple times-- not the best mexican food i've ever had, but some of it's pretty good. and they are very nice. but if i'm craving a burrito for lunch i'll go to chipotle. the guacamole is not bad, kinda oniony. tried both plain cheese quesadilla and one with chicken. skip the chicken one cuz it's too greasy. the plain cheese was really good, though, and a good portion for lunch. and it's cheap and close to work, so i'll probably go back.

Always the same, always amazing. Love the chicken burrito--it needs no sauce. Churros--best ever. Friendly. Huge portions. Chicken tamales...really fine! Enchaladas...muy autentico! Oh and you will never be so full for the bucks you spend...

Well, well, well, another day, another review. Surprisingly, I do not have an El Famous near my home, I have to drive about 20 minutes to a location. I was in Mt. Prospect Thursday stomach growling and saw the signature sign (ahhhhhhh!). Dilemma or irony, I am on a 21 day fast, no meat or sweets. Not a perfect Christian, but I try.. Anyhow, I recalled that they had vegetarian burritos. My first complaint, limited menu displayed. Then menu on the wall displayed a tiny glimpse of their full menu. I ask for a paper menu. I ordered the stuffed pepper burrito. Second complaint, the lady behind the counter could not answer any questions, she shrugged and smiled so I did not order anything else. The stuffed pepper burrito was delicious. It was not a green pepper, I believe it was a grilled poblano pepper. Extremely filling and tasty. So, why only 3 stars, service and presentation. I've experienced better service at other locations, Tinley Park and Chicago on Madison (shout outs!)

I don't get it... and I fully agree with previous reviewer Jacob J. I tried this place because I loved the Wheeling location and grew up on their awesome burritos, tortas, and tacos. At the Wheeling location it's clearly that those efficient workers know what they're doing. Thus I tried this location after I moved at least a half dozen times and every takeout order is disastrous which is strange because I have to wait nearly three times longer for the order to be made. Whatever meat you get is extremely fatty and greasy. I think I even found a bone in my burrito al pastor once with soured ingredients. The sauce they use is completely bland and I find myself always dousing my stuff in hot sauce by the time I get home. That said, whenever I'm in the mood for El Famous I drive an extra 25 mins out of my way to the Wheeling location. I'd advise doing the same.

El famous burritto has great tacos. On tuesdays they are only 1 dollar each and come with cheese lettuce and tomato. I have tried the pork and steak and they have been very satisfying. Everything else looks good like the football sized burrittos and tortas. will have to come back and try the other menu items. definitley a good place for authentic mexican.

Consider it mexican fast food and I'm sure that you'll agree with the stars: My favorite order is: chorizo nachos with extra jalepenos, steak taco and large horchata (If you have had the horchata somewhere before do yourself a favor and try again, it's delicious) Enjoy and bring money for tips!!!

Pretty decent Mexican food. The steak burritos are huge and taste good. Split one with someone. The prices here are average like other places. The guys there are pretty nice and serve up fast. Usually I take my food to go and I chose this place for a fast quick mexican food craving. The tacos aren't so bad either and everything taste fresh. Not a bad choice.

Good cheap mexican food. Can't beat it. Everything is fresh, quick service. I would prefer the food to have a bit more spice to it, but the overvall flavor is good.

If you don't know, then its about time...its a small chain found in the burbs and they have decent tasty amerimexican grub. its mostly fresh, the tacos, the burritos, the taco salads hit the spot when you are in a bit of a rush and though it isn't soul satisfying, still is a good value when you just need something to hold you over until you can treat yourself a little better. Not the fanciest joint, nor the best, but sometimes a better choice than most other quicky meal spots.

  • Matthew A.

If you work around the area, this is hands down the best place to get tacos at lunch. I have no idea why some reviews call this place flavorless, this place sets the bar. With $1 taco tuesdays you cant go wrong.

  • Jacob J.

Those that lead "spice - less" lives, no pun intended, may enjoy. I don't care for the food at this location. I've been to the location in Woodridge, IL and the food is much better. Here, while you do get your money's worth, it lacks in flavor and taste. If you've never been; for about $5 with tax, you can get a big ass burrito, with your choice of meat. Jr. burritos are about $3.50 and both kinds can be appetite killers. Many of the menu items are under $4 if you purchase it separately. They've got "in store" made, churros! Combo meals are about $7 +, combo includes rice and beans. Extra's are an additional charge of 69 cents. This says it best. Four guys (United Nations) walk in for lunch, enthusiastic about Mexican fast food. Twenty minutes later, four guys leave. On the way out all four share looks of disappointment and then proceed to point out how other Mexican fast food joints are so much better.

Has the same taste and quality that you can expect from other El Famous Burrito restaurants. Otherwise, burritos and tacos are good and reliable, though I wonder why the steak looks more like ground beef than steak fragments/chunks. Ample supply of salsa and peppers for you to take on the front counter - take all you want (within reason) or none at all. Smaller place than the DP El Famous, but still has a good amount of chairs and tables, and clean too. May not be the best in American Mexican fast food, but decent and reliable.

    (3)
  • Melissa H.

I agree with the tasteless comment. Not much flavor here. My meat has been cold in the past too. I do love their churros, steak tacos and now they have $1 tacos on Tuesdays!

    (3)
  • F S.

Generally the food is good. The tacos are always good. The burritos are huge, the quesadillas are overpriced and generally a disappointment. They also have a variety of meatless selections if you are interested. The reason for the low rating ( the food is 3 star) is the ongoing problems I've had with carry out. It is very typical to get home and find out you are missing at least one, if not several items you ordered & paid for.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
